What is Chestny ZNAK? Russia's Digital Labeling and Traceability System
Chestny ZNAK (Честный ЗНАК — "Honest Mark"), the Russian Federation's national digital traceability platform, is a mandatory labeling system that enables every product entering the country to be traced from manufacturer to end consumer. Operated by CRPT (Center for Research in Perspective Technologies), the system has been gradually expanded since 2016 to combat counterfeit goods, ensure tax transparency, and protect consumer safety. Products covered by Chestny ZNAK include pharmaceuticals, tobacco, footwear, fur and leather garments, perfumery and cosmetics, textiles and apparel, dairy products, bottled water, beer and alcoholic/non-alcoholic beverages, medical devices, dietary supplements, vegetable oils, pet food, tires, and photographic equipment. The list expands with new product groups each year. The system is technically built on GS1-compliant Data Matrix codes. Each product carries a unique identifier code (GTIN + serial number + expiration date + crypto key) printed on its packaging. This code is validated against the system's central servers; consumers can verify product authenticity within seconds using the free "Честный ЗНАК" mobile application.
